Google releases 1st phone powered by 'Kit Kat'

Google is releasing a smartphone that it hopes will become more like a clairvoyant friend than a piece of hardware.
The Nexus 5 phone is the first device to run on the latest version of Google's Android operating system, nicknamed after the Kit Kat candy bar.
The Nexus 5 and Kit Kat software are designed to make it easier to use Google's search engine and other services to learn about a person's habits and needs so it can display helpful information. Google's virtual assistant, Google Now, also engages in richer dialogue with Nexus 5 users.
As with previous models in the Nexus line, the new phone won't require a commitment to a specific wireless provider. It goes on sale Thursday at Google's online store at starting at $349.

Driver cited for wearing Google Glass expects to fight ticket

An early adopter of Google's Internet-connected eyeglasses plans to fight a citation for wearing the device while driving in San Diego, saying the technology makes navigation easier than smartphones and GPS devices.
Driver Cecilia Abadie was pulled over for speeding Tuesday evening, when a California Highway Patrol officer noticed she was wearing Google Glass and tacked on a citation usually given to drivers who may be distracted by a video or TV screen.
A challenge to what may be a first-of-its-kind citation could force authorities to re-examine laws and consider how best to regulate evolving gadgetry that will one day become mainstream.
The lightweight eyeglasses, which are not yet widely available to the public, feature a hidden computer and a thumbnail-size transparent display screen above the right eye. Users can scan maps for directions -- as well as receive web search results, read email and engage in video chats -- without reaching for a phone.
About 10,000 have been distributed so far in the United States to "explorers" like Abadie, and this week Google announced another 30,000 would be available for $1,500 apiece. Abadie, a software developer, got what she describes as the life-changing technology in May.
In an interview Thursday, she said she was not using her Google Glass when she was pulled over for allegedly going about 80 mph in a 65 mph zone on the drive home to Temecula after visiting a friend.
"The Glass was on, but I wasn't actively using it" to conserve the battery, she said. The device becomes inactive if it's not asked to perform a task.
Abadie expressed surprise that wearing the glasses while driving would be illegal and said she's "pretty sure" she will fight the ticket. First, she said, she needs to seek legal counsel. In the flurry of online commentary her traffic stop has generated, several people saying they are attorneys offered their services.
"The law is not clear, the laws are very outdated," Abadie said, suggesting that navigating with the device could be less distracting than with a GPS unit or phone because drivers don't have to glance down.
"Maybe Glass is more a solution to the cellphone problem than a problem," she said.
It's unclear whether a citation for Google Glass has been issued before. The CHP said it is not sure whether an officer within its own ranks has written one, and an agency spokesman pointed out hundreds of law enforcement agencies in California alone can write traffic tickets.
What is clear, CHP Officer Marc Hale said, is that drivers should not use Google Glass.
"Anything that takes your attention away from the motoring public in front of you is a distraction," Hale said.
Though Google Glass users can continue looking ahead, by glancing at the screen they still divert attention from the roadway and that can make the headgear dangerous, according to David Strayer, director of the University of Utah's Center for the Prevention of Distracted Driving.
"Your eyes aren't looking where they need to look," said Strayer, who has tried Google Glass (though not behind the wheel). Like Abadie, he noted that the law lags far behind the technology.
Legislators in at least three states -- Delaware, New Jersey and West Virginia -- have introduced bills that would specifically ban driving with Google Glass.
A spokesman for Google did not reply to a request for comment. On its website, Google says this about using the headgear while driving: "Read up and follow the law. Above all, even when you're following the law, don't hurt yourself or others by failing to pay attention to the road."

Where do Apples go to rot?

Apple is set to begin selling its latest iPad Air and iPad Mini, prompting millions of folks to dump their old tablets -- along with countless iPods and iTouches. But where do all of those old gizmos go?
Consumers today have a multitude of options for getting rid of their outdated technology, from Amazon to Apple to Walmart and more, and most mean you'll end up ahead, with more than a few bucks in your pocket. Not so long ago, if you wanted to sell an old iPad you were most likely looking at eBay. So what happens to all of these iPads and iPhones once they've been bought up by trade-in programs?
Devices that can't be revived or that are damaged are mined for their parts and then recycled. But gear in working and retrievable condition is sold to a wholesaler and refurbished. And typically, those products end up overseas, explained Anthony Scarsella, chief gadget officer at Gazelle, a company that buys used technology and resells them to wholesalers.
'The demand is global—we have buyers in Latin America, Hong Kong, Africa, it's pretty much every continent.'
- Anthony Scarsella, chief gadget officer at Gazelle
“The demand is very global—we have buyers in Latin America, Hong Kong, Africa, it's pretty much every continent. The majority of our wholesalers are overseas,” Scarsella told FoxNews.com. “To buy these products new in some third world countries is extremely expensive, with prices that are much higher than in the U.S.”
This thriving second economy for "bruised Apples" -- once repaired, of course -- is driven by the healthy demand for all things iPad.
“Right now there's an insatiable demand in secondary markets for older and unwanted devices, and that really applies towards Apple products like the iPhone and iPad,” Scarsella said. Gazelle doesn't have more specific, country by country data, however.
Adds Nik Raman, founder of Usell.com, a marketplace that connects consumers directly with wholesalers who want to buy used technology, “Apple devices retain value the most. We see them depreciate by about 5 percent per month, whereas Android devices depreciate by about 10 percent per month.”
Not even iDevices retain their value indefinitely, though. The older your device, the less you can expect to get for it. Usell's Raman cautions that in general, if a device is more than three years old, you may not be able to sell it. But a three-year old first-generation iPad? BestBuy.com will give you $95 for a “good” condition 16GB model.
The sooner you sell, the more money you can get. Gazelle's data shows a spike in consumers selling devices on the days Apple has its launch event to announce a new product. “The iPad 2 and 3 are now the iPads that are being sold the most,” Scarsella said.
But it's not just ancient iPads that are getting ditched: Gazelle's data shows 66 percent of iPad trades made on 10/22 -- the day the iPad Air and iPad mini with Retina Display announced -- were for iPads that Apple debuted in 2012.
Apple's own trade-in program is part of its Reuse & Recycling program, which is run in partnership with PowerOn Services. While Apple declined to comment for this story, its recycling FAQ says that the company “often” can retrieve up to 90 percent of the original device's weight, recovering and reprocessing glass, metal, and plastics. While consumers can't access a tablet's battery, for recycling and reclamation purposes it's easy for batteries to be removed and safely disposed of in accordance with local e-waste laws.
For those interested in ditching an aging device, trade-in programs are all the rage among big-box retailers. AmazonAppleBest BuyGameStopOffice DepotRadio Shack, and Walmart all have trade-in programs, and those options are in addition to services like GazelleNextWorth, and Usell.com.
Typically, the amount you'll get depends upon the condition of your device. Do your research before accepting a trade-in deal, though, since the terms and value you'll get will vary wildly from store to store and from service to service. Some companies are more forgiving of scratches and scuffs, some refuse to accept non-working devices and others will accept both.
For example, whereas Gazelle accepts a broken device, Best Buy will not. But a Best Buy spokeswoman noted that the company will reclaim parts from devices it accepts, and if a device can't be refurbished and sold, or sold via a secondary market channel, Best Buy will then recycle the device.
What you get back varies, too. Apple, Amazon, Best Buy, and Walmart all give you gift cards, while Gazelle and Usell.com get you cold, hard cash (via check or PayPal). Some programs cover a wide swatch of consumer electronics, while others are limited to specific models and devices.
It goes to show you: Bruised fruit still has a lot of value.

Mystery solved: Google barges are giant floating Google X showrooms

  • Barges BAL0001 and BAL0010 in San Francisco Bay
Barges BAL0001 and BAL0010 in San Francisco Bay. (CBS INTERACTIVE)
Mystery had surrounded a pair of giant barges that appeared at U.S. shores recently and were said to belong to Google, but that mystery has seemingly been solved.
According to a report from CBS News’ San Francisco affiliate KPIX, the barges are floating luxury showrooms for Google X, Google’s top-secret lab that works on various unconventional projects such asGoogle Glass
The barges will be invite-only according to the report, and they will feature multiple product showcase floors as well as a party deck equipped with “bars, lanais and other comforts so Google can fete its upscale customers.”
KPIX says the showroom floors consist of standard 40-foot shipping containers that can be swapped out. This will also make the showrooms portable, the report said, so that Google can place them on trucks or rail cars and transport them anywhere for a local showcase.
One barge is currently docked at a port in San Francisco and the other is located off the coast of Maine, possibly en route to New York City.
